WHITES AND REDS FROM OTHER VARIETIES
White and red wines are produced in abundance from lesser known grape varieties. Some are making a gallant last stand, others claim the legitimacy of an ancestral tradition. Of the whites, the Aligoté and the Altesse are not widely planted. Chenin Blanc, despite the limited area of production, can attain a remarkable quality. Himbertscha and Lafnetscha - the latter producing the Completer wine in the Malans region - are found in the Haut-Valais. Where it not for the abundance of choice, Pinot Blanc would merit particular attention for a wine which combines freshness, body and suppleness. The Rèze deserves a patriotic mention: it is the wine of the Glacier, with a taste that carries the perfume reminiscent of the old country. While Riesling x Sylvaner is barely planted in the Valais, the Riesling is a majestic presence.
